I have always been a BIG HP fan. I would have never guessed in a thousand years that I would buy a Lenovo. what won me over is that they give these to my kids to use in high school. they keep them the whole term and then turn them in at the end of the year. Since I didn't buy them for them (well, I did thru my tax dollars), I just set back and observed how they treated them. they weren't too hard on them, but rough enough to impress me with how much a Lenovo can take.
my son likes online games, which can heat up a computer in a heart-beat, especially if it has intense graphics. i would just take quick notice every once in a while where they put their Lenovo thinkpads. i have found them under blankets (still on), or on top of pillows where absolutely no air could circulate to the processor, and, though they were as hot as fire, the little boxes just kept humming along with no problems. they were also dropped, bumped, and sit on, with still no problems.
So, when i decided to get a new lappy, i decided to try a Lenovo. besides, with amazon's return policy, if i didn't like it, i could just send it back. so with windows 8 on it and a touch-screen, i made the jump. i received the lappy about a week after i ordered it. like a kid on Christmas morn, i immediately tore open the box and went at it. the battery was charged right out of the box. this, of course, made me very happy. i fired her up, did all the registration crap and was met by the start screen on reboot. i was not familiar with windows 8 at all, but i didn't find it to be too bad. it still isn't bad. once u learn all the screen swipes and how to pull down the menus and such, you'll look like tom cruise in minority report when he's slinging this pic over here or that video over there. it just takes some getting used to. btw, u don't have to touch the screen all the time. the mouse pad, which is over-sized, works the same way as the screen.
i have always been an amd guy, so the intel i5 was a change up as well. it's not bad at all. i do A LOT with video editing and this little guy hangs right in there. it is very fast at rendering a vid and the processor doesn't get nearly as hot as my old HP dv7 amd.
i did up the ram in it. it can hold 16 gig. it was a big improvement over the 6 it came with. the bottom access panel wasn't hard to remove at all and all the components are right there. i really liked the fact that the system fan is accessible thru this panel, so cleaning it will be a breeze.
my only problem with this lappy is the battery. a mere 4 cell. it holds up pretty well just piddling around the net and such, but when i fire up the Sony Vegas program to work on and render some vids, it doesn't take long for it to deplete fairly quickly.
other than the battery (for the most part) i am happy, with this lappy!
UPDATE!!!
Just past the one year mark (august 2014), the hdd crashed. I contacted lenovo concerning this and, since it was past one year, all they could do was have me send it in for a small $149 fee for them to diagnose it to make sure the drive crashed. Really?? A fee to check and see if it crashed?? Back in the day when companies gave attention to customer complaints, i would have had a new hdd sent to me on good faith that i would send the bad one back. Heck, i can put a new one in for $50! I told them no thank you. What load of crap. So i'm cutting them back to 2 stars for their lack of concern. This will be the last lenovo i buy.

I can't even begin to express how much I hate this computer. It has been nothing but trouble since I bought it two years ago and my biggest regret is not returning it immediately.
There is a commonly reported issue with the wifi connection and customer service has done absolutely nothing to fix it. It is not a problem with the Internet-- the computer itself is just practically incapable of connecting to wifi even if it's placed directly next to the router. My internet connection on here literally disconnects about every 20 minutes while my husband's is always going strong on his Dell laptop.
That is just the beginning though. There is no end to the errors, the random freezing and shutting down, the sticky keys turning themselves on, the spastic mousepad sensitivity, and so much more. Customer service has solved none of this despite several calls. I have never become quite as enraged with an electronic like I have with this piece of crap laptop. I am a generally chill person but my husband can attest to my outbursts and threats to throw it across the room on the rare occasion that I actually use it. I would suggest not wasting your money on this.
I am hugely disappointed by the service offered by Lenovo. I had bought Lenovo G500s on Labor Day (September 1st 2014). At first everything was fine until after few months (3-5 months), I observed a hardware issue. There was a crack at the hardware near the charging port (this is because the flap is too tight as it damages the hardware every time you open it). As and when I opened and closed the flap, the crack started increasing. I called customer care, they never picked up my call. Never. Neither they replied humbly on chat saying it's a hardware issue you have to report to the store. Then after months of follow up, they said that my manufacturing warranty was from Feb 2014 for a year and has expired (I had bought my laptop on Sept 1st, 2014). Now, because of the crack, my charging port got dislocated. I somehow fixed it by myslelf, but the crack is still there. And somehow my audio jack doesn't work after this incident. I am reporting this issue late as it clicked me late to let every one know about the lack of service offered by Lenovo. I will never buy Lenovo laptop again neither would I recommend any one to buy one. Utter disappointment
I was very pleased with the computer but immediately out of the box the touchpad and mouse buttons did not work. After spending well over an hour on the phone with Lenovo Tech Support they indicated that there was a hardware problem and that could only be remedied by either returning the computer or sending it into Lenovo to be repaired. I need this additional laptop for a conference next week so I cannot afford to wait for the repair. I would not have been able to do anything on the computer if it was not for the Touch screen. I LOVE Lenovo products so I sent it back for another. I'll change this to five stars if the next one proves to be amazing.
Got this as a replacement/upgrade from my old T71.Windows 8 - yuck.Pay extra to downgrade.Touch screens are great for tablets and phones, but I pretty much never use it on my laptop so, for me anyway, this was a useless added feature. The keyboard feels cheap, Lenovo is not ThinkPad, I miss the little red mouse on the keyboard...But, this thing is a beast, and it is great for playing movies. The bigger screen is awesome.
Purchased it for my wife for Christmas, but I've used it a couple of times especially for the purpose of setting the unit up with on line tech support because the product came with a, " 30 day trial of McAfee". It's kind of a short time frame to try an anti virus program when one spends so much on the system to begin with, but I guess that's to be expected. Personally, I'm not real crazy with the LenovoKeyboard. I'm a touch typist and some of the key sizes are modified and slows down my typing speed; however, this unit is for my wife and she has not complained.
